When Comes the Storm

In 2015 we were in the midst of packing and saying our final farewells to the church we had served for over 25 years when I sat across the desk from a doctor and heard the words, “You have cancer!” Within weeks, I was in the hospital, in so much pain I could not get in or out of bed without help. My personal storm was raging! We all endure storms in life. They come whether we are ready for them or not. Was I ready? I began to review, in my mind, sermons I had preached to my congregation; sermons of comfort, strength, and exhortation to prepare them for the storms of life. Was I ready to practice what I preached? Certain sermons particularly came readily to mind. As I meditated on them and the Scriptures from which I drew them, I found that I was indeed resting upon a strong faith foundation. My anchor held!

Later, during months of recovery (my cancer has now been in remission for over 6 years!) I set out to reproduce those sermons and those truths in my first book. I hope you will find it a comfort and encouragement to you as you face your own storms.

The Gospel of God:
A Journey through Romans

Of all the books of the Bible I have studied, the one that has impacted me most deeply is Paul’s letter to the Romans. During my 40 years of ministry, I had the opportunity to preach through it three times, and to teach it in a variety of settings: a small village in Alaska, a theological college classroom in Kenya, a Bible study in our living room in Abu Dhabi. While there are complexities in the text, the broad themes and convincing logic of Paul’s writing are clear.

Turning those sermons and lessons into a book was a labor of love and joy. If you choose to read only one of my books, choose this one! Whether you are a spiritual seeker, a new believer, or you’ve walked with God for many years, I trust you will be blessed. For an additional blessing, why not study it with others?

We Know It Won’t Snow in Abu Dhabi:
Rediscovering Christmas

I spent 25 Christmases in Abu Dhabi. For many in our congregation, Christmas could be a lonely time, far from family and loved ones and all the trappings that we often think of as necessary for celebrating Christmas. It was my responsibility as pastor to plan services and to preach messages of encouragement and hope.

I did that by focusing on the Scripture and the true meaning of Christmas. This book is based on some of those messages, reproduced in the form of a conversation between a retired pastor and four young friends. While this might not appeal to you as appropriate reading in summertime, I recommend it for December reading as a great way to prepare for the Christmas season.

Lessons from the Exodus

I have always enjoyed the stories of the Old Testament. None are more dramatic than the stories of God’s deliverance of Israel from slavery in Egypt and the nation’s journey toward the Promised Land. In this book, I trace the account through the narrative sections of Exodus through Deuteronomy.

What we find are very human stories of people just like you and me. But they are also stories in which we learn valuable lessons about the character of God and his eternal plan of salvation.
